CENTRE FOR REHABILITATION OF WOMEN, ADOLESCENTS,
AND CHILDREN VICTIMS OF VIOLENCE
Structure
of the Centre
Violence is a problem of interaction among people. It
appears in all cultures and societies. It is an instrument
of exerting power and control over the life of those who,
for one reason or another, appear to be powerless. Violence
is especially prevalent in patriarchal societies, where abuse
of power, aimed at gaining control over the weaker person,
is typical. It becomes a model for relationships; it enters
families and people's attitudes. It remains hidden and misunderstood.
This is how violence exists in Bulgaria.
An important responsibility of civil society is to identify
the problem of violence and take care of victims. In Bulgaria,
women, adolescents, and children victims of violence do not
have support and understanding. Very often, the institutions
which should be helping victims, are in a position of power
and disregard the victims' needs.
The Centre for rehabilitation of women, adolescents, and children
victims of violence was established in 1996 as an alternative
to the widespread institutional treatment of victims of violence
in Bulgaria:
We provide
a safe space, where clients can feel accepted, supported,
and understood. Victims are not blamed and their pain is respected;
We provide
care programs aimed at helping women, adolescents, and children
to overcome the mental and social consequences of the experienced
violence; we consider the individual needs of every client;
We create
new programmes based on the needs of women, adolescents and
children who experience violence;
We provide
a space where women, adolescents, and children victims of
violence can rely on professional treatment and support;
